A Brief Collection of DIN Fonts
Intro
This sites use DINish now, and it used to use Bahnschrift found in my PC’s built-in fonts folder. It looks tighter and thinner, but using it does not violate any EULAs in Figure 1.
After a bit of searching, I found that there is actually a historical origin of these fonts.
DIN 1451
In 1931, DIN(Deutsches Institut für Normung, or “German Institute for Standardisation”) proposed a sans-serif font family for industrial use, such as traffic signs. Since then, many realizations has been created.
Realizations
Bahnschrift
It is created by Microsoft, included in Windows 10 and 11, used as the font for user interface for Xbox. I’m not completely sure if it’s OK to embed it in my website, so I change to DINish for safety.
DINish
It is the successor of the no-longer-supported Altinn-Din, which itself is a successor of D-Din.
Roboto
It’s said to be inspired by DIN fonts. A standard font for Android.
Gidole
Suppoorted by Google now.
Inter
Not necessarily a DIN font, but inspired by Roboto.
Other Interesting Fonts
IBM Plex Mono
An interesting font, optimized for UI.
Nunito
A balanced font.
